I love poetry, novels that reveal something fresh about being human, mountains that make you feel small, the wild expanse of oceans, and lots of sleep. However, now these ‘loves’ seem like a distant part of me. Still there but overtaken by bigger loves.
First there came a girl with huge blue eyes. She giggles everyday and has utterly transformed our world. Her sign name is ‘Smiling Flower’. Two years later, there came a boy, also with huge blue eyes. He is an avid climber and explorer and just loves to be outside. Their Daddy Pete is also a climber, a surfer and a musical creative. He has an amazing ability to inspire their giggles and imaginative adventures.
We live on the edge of Derbyshire, 40 minutes from the beauty of the Peak District, next to a small herd of cows and a couple of owls. Every now and then the cows disappear and I worry they have become burgers — but so far they have always come back again.
It is an idyllic setting but life can sometimes feel tough. I started this blog because four years ago, when Smiling Flower was born profoundly deaf, due to CHARGE syndrome, I searched online for some encouragement and information on raising a deaf child — and found relatively little. Over the years I have connected with more people online and in person. The sense of community that has evolved has become invaluable.
